Krystyna 5th April 2020

Dear Chris and Family, On behalf of the Koryl family, we are all deeply saddened to hear of Ian’s passing and we are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers. Ian was a great friend of mine for many years. We both grew up in Smethwick and our paths first met when we started Holly Lodge Grammar School back in 1957. We did not know each other at first but by year 2 we were both in top set and that is when our friendship started. We simply got on with each other, driving ourselves on to nurture our talents in science to the best of our ability. I always remember Ian as being a natural leader, a quality of his which I much admired. We were not really blessed with any great sporting ability but I know that Ian was always determined to do the best he could each day. Nevertheless, he always found time for me for great conversation and many happy hours were spent in each other’s company. We set ourselves some interesting challenges. The late 50s and early 60s were the rock and roll years and we decided to attempt to build an electric guitar. Alas our efforts came to very little as our final product only had one string. I also remember that Ian had a great interest in photography, a hobby at which he was very good at indeed. The years passed by quickly at Holly Lodge and in our final year we were two of only a small number to secure a place at university. Ian went off the the University of Hull to read Biochemistry and I secured a place at the University of Nottingham to read Pharmacy. Even after starting university we always found time to visit each other. I remember how much he enjoyed watching the Animals rock band with me at Nottingham. I was also greatly honoured to be his best man. I remember that long drive up north with his dad in an old A40. I was amazed the car actually got us there and back. I also remember you wedding with great fondness. It was a wonderful occasion and I could see that my friend was very happy indeed. After the university days had flown by and after your wedding we always made the effort to stay in touch. Myself and my wife and children greatly enjoyed the visits you and Ian and your children made to our home. Even in our autumnal years Ian always made the effort to phone me and to send me a card at Christmas. I will sincerely miss my dear friend Ian. He was a loyal and honourable friend who was always very kind to me and very humble. Myself and my wife Krystyna and my two boys will keep Ian and all of you in our prayers. May he rest in peace. God bless you all and we are with you all in spirit at this very sad time. Bill Koryl.
