Memories of a holiday in Crete with Chris and Ian: It was a last minute booking near the end of the season. Nice accommodation, an excellent swimming pool and a nearby taverna which did good food - so all looking really good. Chris and Ian were in an apartment just over the hallway from us so pre-dinner dinkies' worked very well. We decided to rent a car and 'go explore' seems a good idea!¬ The car was an elderly and well used Corsa but it did the job> I would drive...........so off we went. The dry nice day suddenly turned to rain and when it rains, oh dear, it really does rain !! The water ran of the hills and embankments and suddenly the road became a river. Further progress seemed pointless and just ahead of us was a taverna. Parked the car outside and by the time we got through the door we were all soaked !! Back to the car, turn round and back from whence we came. We did wonder if the car would make it back without being flooded - but, yes, it did. We dried out and called it a day and retired for dinkies'!! Local tours offered a boat trip from Rodos where we were staying, to the main town whose name escapes me. At the appointed hour we boarded a bus to take us to our departure point, the sun shone and all was well or so we thought. The departure jetty was a bit 'Greek' but the boat looked OK - off we went and enjoyed the sea views etc. Arriving 'in town' we did some sightseeing and in due course found local taverna. A couple of drinks and the food arrived and so did the storm. It lashed it down and no, we did not have waterproofs! Stayed on as long as possible at the taverna as our return journey was not to leave until fairly late. The good people at our eatery thankfully produced bin bags for the four of us and suitably adorned we set off through heavy rain to the harbour along dodgy Greek pavements which came to a sudden end as they are inclined to do and I stepped off into a deep pool of water so I am now totally wet through. Arrived at the harbour at the appointed time and yes, you guessed it - no boat. Fortunately the harbour sported a small covered area to shelter from the rain. Much waiting about and lo! our transport arrives. Boarded, the crew (3) caste off and then tried to find the harbour exit. This involved a fair amount of course corrections aided by one guy hanging out of the window shouting instructions to the wheel man - this is not good - are we going to get home? More shouted instructions and by some miracle we did eventually make it back and so onto the bus and salvation ahead! But, as they say - that's Greece. Tony & Ann Barmby
